If you were a fan of the budget Series 2 lock by Kryptonite, then we suspect that you will also be pleased with this one. With only a slight price increase, it is certainly worth the extra money. Although there is only a slight increase in price, we discovered that the Series 4 lock offers far more in the way of protection than the previous model.

In order to give you a better idea of what this bicycle lock has to offer, we have tested and reviewed it. Please read on below for more information so that you can see if this is the right lock for your needs.

The Design of the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock

In terms of design, this bike lock has it all. It isn’t made from your standard steel or aluminium which can easily be cut. Instead, the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock is constructed from 14mm hardened max-performance steel. This boosts security massively and offers far more protection from bolt cutters and angle grinders.

This U lock also comes with three keys which are also made from stainless steel. They look and feel really high quality. It has a deadbolt design and the entire lock has been constructed really well. In terms of security, this is incredibly well-made. The patent pending double deadbolt design not only makes theft very difficult, but it makes twist attacks far less likely too.

The disc style cylinder of the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock is both pick and drill resistant, so the chances of a thief being able to undo the lock and steal your bike are very slim indeed. One thing that we really liked about the design of this bicycle lock is the fact that the crossbar design is significantly smaller than previous models.

The Portability of the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock

One thing that should absolutely be tested for every bicycle lock review is the portability of the lock itself. If you are going to be traveling to and from work with your bike then you need to be sure that you are not going to run into any problems when carrying the lock with you.

When it comes to maximum security level locks, you have to be prepared to have quite a bit of weight to the lock. We will say this; the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock is quite heavy. At 1.70kg, you will definitely notice it when it is carried in a backpack. Although it is quite heavy, it is worth pointing out that the dimensions are more than reasonable. At 10.2 x 22.9 cm, it can easily be stored in a backpack and taken to and from your destination.

Overall, the portability of this particular bicycle lock is quite good, especially when you consider the fact that it is constructed from hardened max-performance steel. We were actually quite surprised that it wasn’t heavier than it is.

Using the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock

One thing that we were pleasantly surprised about is how easy it is to use the bike lock. Once we had arrived at our destination and found a suitable spot to secure our bike, it was simply a matter of fastening the lock and using the double deadbolt.

After a few tugs of the lock it was very clear that it was completely secure and that the bicycle was going nowhere. Upon our return, it was simply a matter of using the stainless steel key (which also comes with a nice LED key fob) and undoing the lock.

Considering the sheer amount of security on offer from the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock we really expected it to be far more difficult to use but fortunately this wasn’t the case. It offers maximum security and is incredibly user friendly.

The only possible thing that we could complain about, and this is just personal preference, is the colour of the lock. The black part is fine, but the bright orange cylinder could cause issues. We worried that the bright orange colour may attract those who want to try their luck. However, given the level of security on offer with this lock from Kryptonite, this shouldn’t really be much of an issue.

Overall, we were really impressed with the Kryptonite Series 4 D Lock. It performs well, it is incredibly easy to use and it offers huge amounts of security. If you are happy to spend a little extra money then we highly recommend this lock as an option to consider.
