The Design of the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500

Given that this is a foldable bike lock, we really weren’t sure what to expect from the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500. We assumed that security and quality would be compromised with this type of design, but this really wasn’t the case. Each bar on the lock is 5.5mm and folds into each other making carrying it very easy.

The bars themselves are made from high quality steel which certainly feels durable. One thing that we really liked about the design of the lock is the fact that it has a soft touch coating. This coating protects the paintwork of your bike from being scratched by the bars. The lock itself also has a nice soft touch coating.

Another nice design feature is the Abus link protection shield system. This offers a significant amount of protection from saw attacks which are quite frequent these days. A final feature that impressed us was the glowing key. We found this to be incredibly useful when using the lock in the dark. Overall, the design of this foldable bike lock actually really surprised us.

Using the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500

Upon first using the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 we did encounter a few issues. If you have never used a foldable bike lock before then you might find the same. However, after figuring out how the links fold into each other, we were able to use it quite easily.

Something that we did like about using the lock is that the lock itself is on the inside of the links rather than the outside. This does make using it a little more tricky, but it also makes it far more difficult for thieves to be able to get to the lock to try and wedge it open.

The only issue that we did have is that the lock might be a little too small in some cases, depending on what you are trying to secure your bike to. We found that the easiest way of rectifying this issue was to use the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 in conjunction with a D lock or a U lock. This then gives you extra length to work with.

The Portability of the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500

One thing that we loved about this bike lock is how portable it is. Each link of the chain part of the lock folds neatly into each other, making it incredibly compact to carry. It can take some time to figure out how the links fold in properly, but once you have gotten the hang of it you will see how portable it is.

In terms of weight, the Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 comes in at 1.9kg which is a little heavier than we would have liked from a bike lock that is specifically designed to be portable. However, the hardened steel material is what makes it quite heavy.

We had no trouble fitting this lock into a backpack and really didn’t notice the extra weight on our rides. You could probably even secure it to your bike seat for your rides if you are not travelling too far.

Overall, this is an impressive bike lock. If you want something that is going to be compact enough to fit into your backpack whilst still being very secure then this is definitely an option for you to consider.
